May 7 2021 Friday! Intro to Revelstoke Community Plan Assignment

Hello and welcome to Eng 9 - CG is a small class. You also have an EA - Ms. Mackenzie to assist you this afternoon (both classes).

Please request that Ms. Mackenzie pick up the library laptop cart for this afternoon (Both Eng 9 classes).

1. Attendance - review email attendance list. Call in and/or write down and send to front office any absences.

2. Student - Self Guided Reading Time - 20 min. Students have their own books for this task. Ben and Cormac are listening to Into the Wild Audio Book. Kristian - will select his own self directed task. 

3. Revelstoke Official Community Plan! 

The City of Revelstoke is updating its official Community Plan - 20 year plan! 

Teacher to review with the class - Pages 1-4 of the What's An Official Community Plan? PDF

4. Assignment - looking at the categories outlined on Page 3 of the What's An Official Community Plan? PDF document - What categories (values) are mentioned? Place these on the board. 

Class Discussion - (Note: Home Learners - please place your answers to the below questions (including group work) in our private Home Learning Channel chat on the Eng 9 Team)

5. Class Discussion:

*Where will your food come from in the next 10-12 years in Revelstoke? (If you were to stay in town - pretend you are in this scenario) 
*How would you get around? By Bike? Car? Bus?
*What will we need to do, as a community, to help the environment? 
*What do we wish to preserve/regenerate?
*How will we treat each other as a community?
*What kind of jobs will we need to have, and what needs to be in place to get those?

6. Group Work: 20 min 

Assign students to max 2 per group. 

Each group takes a category and brainstorms at least 10 ideas for each category. Be prepped to share your top 5 after brainstorming session. Choose a scribe and write your ideas on a group paper. All names of group members on your group paper. 

1. Housing (Are there other housing options that we need to consider for Revelstoke? Are there options that would increase affordability etc.)

2. Economy (What is Revelstoke's main economy now? What will it be in the next 10-20 years? Tourism/New Business? What will the future jobs in Revelstoke be?) 

3. Sustainability (E.g. Food Security/Environment etc. - Where will Revelstoke citizens get their food? How many more people will move here and become residents? (Note current count is somewhere in the 8K range - what will it be in 10-20 years? How do we ensure that Revelstoke's food options and environment remain sustainable) 

4. Recreation (What types of recreation will remain in Revy? Any new ideas for recreational opportunities that may be an option in Revy in the next 10-20 years?) 

5. Community/Culture (What type of community and culture does Revy have now? What type of community vibe and feel do you believe Revy will have in the next 10-20 years? Why?) 

Class discussion and sharing of your ideas :) 

Teacher: Please collect all work and place in the white bin labelled CG by the window behind the teacher's desk. 

7. End Class: By Showing - The Future Of Work: Will Our Children Be Prepared?  Question: How does this video related to the group work you all just did?

Note: Possible homework - if students did not complete Assign 5 yesterday on Office 365 - Eng 9 Team Hathorn CG - Laptops - Please complete the 3 Social Media Questions for Assign 5 and submit as homework :)
